Our Musical Influences - the 70's, 80's and 90's
the songs, hits and anthems from the 1970's - 1990's and why we play them
the 1970's
The 1970s were a kaleidoscope of sound, style, and soul. It was a decade where music didn’t just evolve—it exploded in every direction. Here's what made it unforgettable:
Genre Diversity Like Never Before
Disco Fever: Studio 54, mirror balls, and the Bee Gees—disco ruled the dance floor.
Classic Rock Titans: Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Rod Stewart and Queen delivered epic anthems, sexy hits and concept albums.
Funk & Soul Power: Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind & Fire, and Marvin Gaye brought groove and depth with a little techno & beginning of Glam Rock thrown in by Sweet.
Singer-Songwriter Renaissance: Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and James Taylor gave us introspective, poetic storytelling.
Punk & New Wave Roots: The Ramones, Blondie, and The Clash laid the groundwork for the rebellious 80s.
The 1980's
The 1980s were a musical explosion of innovation, personality, and unforgettable style. Here's what made it such a golden era:
Genre-Bending Innovation
Synth-pop & New Wave: Synthesizers became mainstream, giving rise to iconic sounds from bands like Depeche Mode, Eurythmics, and A-ha.
Hip-Hop Emergence: Artists like Run-D.M.C. and Public Enemy brought hip-hop into the cultural spotlight.
Glam Metal & Arena Rock: Bon Jovi, Guns N’ Roses, and Van Halen delivered big riffs and even bigger hair.
Dance & Freestyle: Miami freestyle and Chicago house made dance floors electric.
The 1990's
The 1990s were a wild, genre-blending, emotionally raw, and culturally defining decade for music. It was a time when authenticity met experimentation, and the result was pure magic.
Genre Explosion & Evolution
Grunge & Alt-Rock: Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and Pearl Jam’s “Alive” redefined rock with angst and authenticity but it was the evolution of Guns 'n Roses mixing hard rock and ballads that made them one of the most popular Bands of the 90's with Use your Illusion 1 & II on rotation with MTV.
Hip-Hop Renaissance: Tupac, Biggie, Dr. Dre, and Lauryn Hill brought storytelling, social commentary, and swagger to the mainstream.
Pop Perfection: Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, and NSYNC delivered polished, catchy hits that dominated the charts.
R&B Royalty: Whitney Houston, TLC, Boyz II Men, and Aaliyah gave us smooth vocals and emotional depth.
Electronic & Dance: Fatboy Slim, The Prodigy, and Daft Punk pushed boundaries with techno, house, and trip-hop.
